Hello, everyone! Today is all about FALL! This season is such a happy time for me, and I’m sure many of you feel the same! Seeing the leaves change and eating everything pumpkin is pure bliss. I love pulling out all of my comfy sweaters and watching Halloween movies. For me, hygge and autumn go hand in hand. Hygge is a something special you feel and experience. I know it is quite a big trend in the U.S. right now, but here in Denmark, it is a way of life. You don’t have to go out and buy candles to practice hygge. Simply snuggling on the couch with your family with lots of warm blankets and a good movie is ‘hyggeligt.’ 🙂 Below is a list of my favorite things to do during the fall season to embrace hygge and enjoy this wonderful time of year.
1. Decorate
Adding a few seasonal touches to your home is one of the easiest ways to get into the fall spirit. I don’t have as many decorations as I’d like, but the tiny ones I do have make me so happy – especially this gold and white pumpkin!
My mom mailed me this adorable decorative Halloween book last year when she heard about my struggle finding Halloween decorations here in Denmark. Luckily, I did manage to find this little jack-0-lantern this year!
2. Light Some Candles
Lighting candles is probably one of the first things people think of when they hear the word “hygge”, and it sure is a good way to make your home feel extremely cozy. Yankee Candles are my personal favorite. My mom has used them my whole life, and the scent of them reminds me of home. Spiced Pumpkin always makes me think of my mom’s chocolate chip pumpkin bread and watching Halloweentown with my family. 🙂
3. Bake Some Apple Muffins
As you should know, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. I love to make it special with some yummy baked goods! These apple muffins were so amazing. I did tweak the recipe (linked here) a little bit and just used what I had on hand, but these were a big hit!
Or an Apple Pie …
A classic fall (and American) favorite! Apple pie is a given September through November. I LOVE PIE. I love the way it smells as it bakes in the oven. I love it with ice cream for dessert. And I love it with a big cup of coffee for breakfast. You can’t go wrong with apple in the autumn time.
4. Visit a Pumpkin Patch
There is nothing more cozy than walking through a pumpkin patch in an oversized sweater on a chilly fall day. I always loved finding the perfect pumpkin and seeing all the cornstalks and haystacks! Pumpkin patches are certainly one thing I miss about home, but I did spot a nice pumpkin display in the city recently that reminded me of something from Pennsylvania.
5. Make a Delicious Homemade Soup
I really like to cook – especially comfort food. Eating a steaming bowl of soup on a cold evening is the best! I just whipped up this soup using some leftover chicken and some cans I had in the pantry like diced tomatoes and kidney beans. I topped it off with a little sour cream and cheddar cheese, and it was perfect.
6. Have a Fall Latte
I enjoy chai lattes all year around (with LOTS of cinnamon on top.) They are one of my very favorite drinks! However, I guess it is most appropriate to drink them in the fall and winter season. 🙂
Being that this next drink is limited to only the fall season, I’d recommend the Pumpkin Spice Latte – or frappe in this case (as shown in the photo below.) Both are delicious! I know it is such a basic thing to say, but there is a reason the PSL gets so much hype! I am sooo thankful that Starbucks offers the Pumpkin Spice Latte in Denmark. It wouldn’t be fall without it!
7. Pick Up a Fall Scent
Self-care is so important. I can’t stress that enough! Just taking the extra 10 seconds to apply some lotion after a shower or put on some hand cream before bed is something I always make time for. Normally around this time of year, I head to Bath and Body Works and pick up some Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin body wash and lotion (it has been a fall staple for me for nearly 8 years.) Unfortunately, Bath and Body Works is not in Denmark. You can imagine how excited I was when The Body Shop released their Vanilla Pumpkin line! It smells amazing and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. I also picked up a travel sized Almond Milk & Honey body butter, as it is another super cozy and calming scent.
I hope you enjoyed this simple and fun list! I would love to hear what YOUR favorite thing to do in the fall is. Let me know in the comments below. 🙂 Also, I just wanted to give credit to my mom for always making the change of seasons such a happy time in our house. She has inspired me sooo much and is truly the queen of Halloween! You can see how she decorates the house for here.
Have a great day!
Madison

Oh yes, your Mom is the Queen Of Halloween! And I was so happy to find her, in Blog Land! 🙂
The little book she sent you….. I have often seen the cover art, at this time of year. But never knew where it came from. Now I do.
I have a Pumpkin Spice candle, on my kitchen island now. And through the season. Along with Warm Apple Pie candle, at times. They are delightful. Not overly scented, and not seeming like mostly chemical smells. I love the gentle ones.
Happy Haunting Time!

Madison!!!!!
I adore this!!!!
I am so happy that you are carrying on the special touches we love so much here,
and how awesome is it that it goes hand in hand with the culture of Hygge in your Nicolas’ Denmark?
I love everything about this, my daughter.
Love you!!
See you soon!!!
Love you, momma <3
It is a delight to see that you have carried on such wonderful traditions that you were brought up with. It is always a great thrill to see my own daughters passing on traditions to their children. I am a lover of Pumpkin Spice candles too and of course soup.
Thank you! Hope you are enjoying this beautiful time of year <3
Madison!!! (hopping over from your moms) I just love this post, thank you for the smiles. I am just so proud of you (and I know you don’t know me and vice versa, but your mom is just such a lovely person ). Waving to Nicolas. Sending many hugs to you from Western NY.
Hi, Linda! Awww thank you so much! You are sweet! Happy to be blog friends <3
Hopped over from your sweet mom’s as well. And yes, she taught you well. Adore all her holiday posts. My father was raised in Denmark, so I enjoy reading about your comings and goings and the traditions there. I love this time of year, especially once it gets dark a bit earlier. Nothing like lighting fall scented candles and cozying up with a good book.
Hi, Lauren! Oh my goodness, that is so cool. Do you speak any Danish or celebrate any Danish traditions? 🙂 Thanks for stopping by!
I love fall…I love Halloween. I love to decorate everything for Halloween! You have some really great ideas on what to do…and that apple pie is looking good.
Thank you, Pam! It’s so fun to decorate for Halloween – I agree 🙂

Oh my goodness, so jealous! Hope you picked out the perfect pumpkin. 🙂
Apple pie and Spiced Latte please. We get that Starbucks flavor here in the Philippines too even if we don’t have fall.

Hi, Veronica! Isn’t it so nice that Starbucks carries their season-themed drinks all over the world? It is so yummy!
Baking and a cup of coffee are my favorite because I get to really enjoy them.

Ah sooo many cozy things in this post! I’m all for candles and halloween decorations at the moment!
Thanks so much for reading, Jasmin! xx
Loved reading this and even though it’s not fall in Australia at the moment it’s still quite cold and this post really made me want to get all cosy! I’m going to get myself some candles to light and bake some apple muffins 🙂

Whoops, I am a bit late in commenting, since it is past Halloween time but I love this post! Your pictures look gorgeous and these are all such wonderful ideas for embracing fall (or hygge!) I’m always dying to light candles during this time of year, but because I have a parakeet, I can’t (the scent and smoke is bad for their lungs). I’ll just live vicariously through you!
Hehe thanks so much, Kim! 🙂
