Summer Hygge Inspiration // Sommerhygge

Summer is slowing down, and I am making sure to savor every moment. With nearly a month left before autumn starts creeping in, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the warm weather and sunshine. Last year I wrote a post about how to embrace hygge in the fall as well as explained the special Danish tradition of hygge. Today’s post includes some hyggelige and simple things I’ve done to relax and embrace summer. I hope it inspires you to do the same. 🙂

1. Make Jordbærgrød (Strawberry Porridge)

This is a very special Danish summer dessert Nicolas’s mom showed me how to make. It is so yummy and different from any treat I’ve had in the states. It is actually quite simple and is best when made with fresh, locally-grown strawberries. For those of you who aren’t Danish and would like to try to make jordbærgrød, I recommend this recipe which is in English and uses U.S. measurements. 🙂 I should also add that this dessert is often referred to as rød grød med fløde which is one of if not the hardest phrase to pronounce in Danish!

2. Indulge in an Ice Cream

This is an obvious summer tradition, but I have to mention it as it is my favorite summer tradition. Nothing beats an ice cream cone or a popsicle on a hot summer afternoon. 🙂

3. Grow Your Own Produce + Eat Seasonally

My mom has started her own little kitchen garden on our deck, and I LOVE it! We have grown our own herbs, tomatoes, zucchini, and bell peppers. It is so fun and rewarding. Summer is also the time of year when so many fruits and vegetables are locally in season, and my family takes full advantage of that. I really enjoy supporting local farmers at the market and fruit stands by buying the fruits and vegetables we haven’t grown ourselves. The produce tastes so fresh, and it is fun to plan meals around what is currently in season.

4. Make Some Lemonade

My sister and I made the most delicious homemade lemonade using some of the mint grown in our garden! It was the perfect summer treat. This recipe was super simple and didn’t involve juicing the lemons (which is always hard for me with my noodle arms. 😉 )

5. Eat Outside

I enjoy eating all my meals outside in the summertime – especially dinner. This is something we always do at Nicolas’s family beach house, and it is the definition of hyggelig. Before I moved back to the states, my lovely friends hosted tapas on the terrace, and it was wonderful! Sitting in the sun, drinking rosé, and eating all types of yummy meats, cheeses, and bread was heavenly. I miss them all so much and can’t wait to do it again sometime!

If you have any cozy ideas to add to this list, comment down below! I’d love to hear them. 🙂 Have a lovely week! xx

I am a great fan of fresh herbs and love to grow them and then dry them for Winter use. A taste of Summer on a Winters day.

Such a good idea! We didn’t plant enough this year to stock up for the winter, but hopefully next year!

I have been enjoying or should I say indulging in a lot of ice cream this summer haha. Lemonade too! I like to add some flavored syrup in mine and also some sprite so it can be a bubbly lemonade with a hint of raspberry syrup. It’s really delicious you should give it a try.
