Risengrød (Danish Rice Porridge) // 12 Days of Christmas Day 9

Mmm, mmm! Yes, today is another food post. I just had to share this with you all! Before meeting Nicolas, I had never heard of or eaten risengrød before. Now I absolutely love it, and it is a Christmas tradition I can’t do without!

Risengrød is Danish rice porridge that is normally sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and topped with a pat of butter. Nicolas’s mom made it for me during my first trip to Denmark nearly two and a half years ago. It is a very special treat in Nicolas’s family and in the rest of Denmark – especially at Christmas time! Nicolas has told me many stories of his Christmases as a child and how he would leave out a bowl of risengrød for the elf that lives in the attic during the month of December. 🙂 Nicolas’s mom also told me that in the olden days risengrød would be served as the first course at Christmas dinner in hopes of getting filled up, therefore not needing to indulge in so much meat and side dishes afterwards. She has now shared her recipe with me, and I made it for the first time last week. To my surprise, it turned out perfectly!

There are many recipes available online if you’d like to try and make it yourself. This one looked pretty promising to me! Just make sure you are using the correct type of rice. In the United States, I am pretty sure you could use porridge or pudding rice. 🙂 I think risengrød is a warm, delicious meal that is perfect for those cold winter mornings or cozy winter nights.

Do you have any special foods you enjoy around Christmastime? Let me know in the comments below! Have a great evening!

Today’s candle is Cozy By The Fire. I haven’t gotten a chance to burn it yet, but Yankee’s website says it is blend of ginger, clove, and orange. Today’s tea is Tummy Love with ginger, turmeric, and cardamom. I am sure this will be great during the holidays with all the sweets I’ll be indulging in! 😉 Don’t forget to check out my mom’s blog and her friend Danielle’s to see what they are up to during Day 9!

Oh does your rice pudding look delicious! It’s so nice you are sharing the traditions you are learning about in Denmark. I learned to make rice pudding from my Nanny many years ago. My recipe has eggs in it so it’s more like a custard. ♥

This looks so cozy and delicious! I could definitely warm up with a bowl of this on a cold winter night ♥ One food tradition I have is I always make Panettone French toast the day after Christmas. Panottone is an Italian sweet bread that has dried fruit in it. I had never had it up until I met my husband. I tried it for the first time our first Christmas together. Ever since then it’s a Christmas staple for me! I started making French toast with the leftover bread a few years ago. It’s so good! Now I look forward to that more than the plain bread : )

Okay so when I was younger, I went to Danish language camp for six summers. And my absolute favorite things were risengrød and rødgrød med fløde. So I love that you love it and are enjoying around Jul! Now I really want to make some for myself. It’s the food equivalent of hygge to me.

Hi, Madeline! Oh how I would love to chat with you sometime all about your connection to Denmark! I hope you get the chance to make some risengrød over the holiday. Merry Christmas!!! <3

Sounds delicious. I like to make a sausage/sage/onion/cranberry wreath at this time of year. It is like a giant sausage roll formed into the shape of a wreath, a firm family favourite.

Oh how I love Rice or Bread pudding…smiles. We have pizza for Christmas Eve, it has been a tradition for nearly 29 years now (both sides of the family find it so odd, really they do–but there is a rather long story on whyyyyy we have pizza, smiles). And Christmas day I make lasanga and yeast rolls. I like to keep it simple this time of the year, and hopefully, when/if my son leaves the nest, he will follow some of the traditions.

A very hearty Merry Christmas to Madison and both families, smiles.

I think pizza is great tradition! My family would love that. Hehe 🙂 My mom has made lasagna some Christmases, and it was always a nice meal to enjoy together! Christmas is already busy enough. Keeping it simple is the way to go. <3 Merry Christmas!!!

I feel like I shouldn’t have red that as I am not home and I am getting hungry.
