All About My New Job

Today’s post is a little life update. I am so excited to share what I’ve been up to!

I’m not sure if I wrote about this before, but I am not a big fan of change. I also have a difficult time when I don’t know what the future holds! I like schedules and plans. 🙂 So when Nicolas and I were planning our big move to the states, I was struggling! I had no idea what I was going to do. I earned my makeup artistry certification while in Denmark and had many opportunities in Copenhagen. Moving to a smaller city in Pennsylvania didn’t present as many options, so I knew I might have to try something new.

I spent hours upon hours thinking, searching online, and worrying about where I would find a job that I loved. I considered multiple options such as beauty supply stores and receptionist jobs at hair salons in an effort to stay within the beauty industry. If that didn’t pan out, I planned on waitressing. When I got to the states, I began dropping off CVs and job applications. At the same time, my mom and I began wedding planning

A couple weeks passed, and I still hadn’t found a job. It was a sunny summer morning, and my mom and I were sitting on the back deck. We were discussing the wedding and decided it was time I started dress shopping! (Read my post all about that here.) We had no idea where to begin, but my wonderful Aunt Deb recommended a little boutique downtown. My mom and I had never heard of it, so I decided to give them a call. The woman that answered the phone was so sweet and enthusiastic about her job. She explained that I needed to make an appointment to try on wedding gowns and that she’d be happy to help me when I came in. She went on to explain that she would spend as much one-on-one time with me as she could, but she was currently running her boutique all by herself and might need to step away to help other customers. That didn’t bother me one bit, so I decided to make an appointment. I sat on the porch looking at inspiration for my wedding gown, and then it hit me. I could sell wedding dresses! The woman on the phone said she was shorthanded, and this seemed like a perfect opportunity to help her out. I printed out my resume and stopped in the store with my mom a few days later. We had a look around and saw how beautiful the boutique was. Upon leaving, I introduced myself to the owner and handed her my resume. She seemed open to the idea and said she would call me for an interview if she was interested.

That kind woman on the phone is now my boss, and I am a bridal and formal wear consultant in the cutest little shop in the center of my city. I love my job, and I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity. One of the reasons I love being a makeup artist is that I have the opportunity to make women feel beautiful and help boost their self-confidence. By selling gowns, I can do that exact same thing! I am learning all about body types and color palettes so I can figure out what dress will best suit every woman that comes through the door. I also have the opportunity to offer my makeup services in the shop, so everything works out perfectly.

Another amazing aspect of my job is the consignment part of the boutique. Every single wedding gown in the store is brand new, as well as many of the formal gowns we offer. However, we do take gowns in by consignment. This has been an eye-opening experience for me. Anyone can make an appointment to bring in their formal wear under the condition that it is ‘like new’ with zero rips, stains, or tears. Each gown will then be looked over to see if it would be a good addition to the boutique. The consigner will earn money back on a gown they only wore once or twice, and it will give a girl or woman the opportunity to purchase a designer gown they might not normally be able to afford. Sometimes we receive really cool pieces like vintage prom gowns or even dresses that were purchased in other countries. It is also an incredibly sustainable way to shop! Since starting at the boutique, I’ve become much more interested in sustainability, shopping habits, and vintage clothing. I even got my first second-hand bag! (Stay tuned for a post all about that.) I really feel as if I have found my niche, and I couldn’t be happier about it. 🙂

In addition to working at the dress shop, I’ve been working part-time for my dad’s company doing social media and helping Nicolas with whatever he needs assistance with. Life is busy, and I am still getting used to this transition! I hope this post is just a little reminder to you all that sometimes things work out in the most unexpected way. 🙂 I never thought I’d be selling wedding gowns, but if I really think about it, it makes total sense. Since I was little, I’ve watched What Not to Wear and of course Say Yes to the Dress. I think in the back of my head this is always something I’ve wanted to do. I am excited to be in the blissful wedding atmosphere long after my own wedding is over. 🙂 If you live in the area, feel free to contact me! I’d love to help you find your dream dress.

xx, Madison
